8. Naver

The market share of Naver jumps up to 0.13% right away, which provides it with the 8th place in the top search engines list. Now just as Google, Naver also provides a multitude service associated with different dimensions of internet. There is email client, children’s search engine, web portal, translation services, encyclopaedia and many more services offered by Naver.

Naver has implemented a technique of monopolizing their control over South Korean Market. Other search engines are not allowed to access its collection of knowledge base and blogs. Even though the search engine is very popular in South Korea, it has a very little chance for the search engine to dominate the international market, since Google is still the best service that one can gain when it comes to looking for answers.

The primary aim of the developers was to develop a question-and-answer service. Later it turned into a search engine and became only “Ask”. Also provides a number of other services along with being a search engine, such as Yahoo! Mail. The search engine has certainly seen its height in the year of 2000 when it witnessed a valuation of $125 billion.

However, the success was not long lived. Back in 1998, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin (who now comes under the list of Top 10 Richest Personalities in 2022) tried to sell Google to Yahoo! for only $1,000,000 and Yahoo! refused their offer. But soon after that Yahoo! potentially lost to Google. And now Yahoo! does not even power their own search engine rather the searches are powered by Microsoft Bing, hence, the results are pretty much similar. Yahoo! still provides a variety of services but those are now hardly used.

3. Baidu

The third largest search engine of the world is Baidu with a market capture of 7.34%. It is China’s most used search engine. Baidu absolutely dominates Chinese market and leaves a very little space for Google to enter. The search engine was founded back in the year of 2000 and now it is recognised as one of the largest internet service and artificial intelligence companies all over the world.

China certainly has the “largest and most sophisticated online censorship operation in the world”, which the search engines need to comply before entering the market of China. Page and Brin tried to sell Google to Yahoo! as well, but they also were not interested. And now Google and Alphabet are worth of more than $750 billion making Brin and Page two of the richest personalities of the world. The name Google was derived from the word googol, which means 10 raised to the power of 100.

Google has extended its area of services and has become much more than just search engine. It has several other software solutions, such as Google lens, Google drive, Google maps, Google translation and many more. It has acquired YouTube and has also invested in hardware, such as smartphones and laptops. Google has also launched Alexa, a virtual assistant, that has become quite popular.
